Chania and Oreti Estates, owned by Boyce Harris, are among the last privately-owned medium to large-scale coffee plantations in Kenya, managed by descendants of original pioneer farmers. Located in Thika at an elevation of 1524 masl on volcanic soil, these estates cultivate French Mission, Ruiru 11, Batian, SL14, and SL28 coffee varieties using washed, honey, and natural processing methods.
The estates have a rich history, with Allen Charles Harris establishing Karamaini Estate in Thika in 1904. His son Ivan expanded the coffee area at Chania Estate, while Peter Allen Harris founded Oreti Estate, focusing on pineapples, coffee, and later macadamia nuts. Today, Boyce Marquis Allen Harris continues the family legacy, managing both estates since 2013.
Chania Estate spans 180 acres, with 95 acres of French Mission and other varieties like Ruiru 11, SL28, SL34, and Batian. Oreti Estate, at 90 acres, grows SL34 and SL28, known for their superior coffee quality despite susceptibility to diseases. Coffee blocks are named after local events or landmarks, such as 'Kamonde' and 'Mukuyu.'
Harvesting is meticulously done by hand, selecting only ripe cherries, and processing occurs on the farms, primarily through wet processing. Parchment coffee is then hulled, polished, graded, and bagged for auction. Worker welfare is prioritized, with a permanent labor force of 40, housing, a nursery school, social activities, and support for local community projects.
Chania and Oreti Estates strive to produce top-grade Arabica coffee with rich, full flavors, medium body, and medium acidity. Their processing includes both washed and natural methods, ensuring high-quality beans that cater to diverse market preferences.
